Get to know the talented individuals behind Parks Fly Shop.

Richard Parks, Owner/Operator of Parks’ Fly Shop, hails from northern Minnesota and discovered fly fishing on Lake Superior’s north shore streams. Born in 1947, he moved to Gardiner in 1953 when his father founded the shop. Richard’s early passion for fly fishing evolved into guiding by 1961 and continued through college. After serving in the US Army and co-authoring two fishing books, he embraced conservation activism, contributing to Trout Unlimited and leading various organizations. In 2004, he established the Gardiner Guesthouse with his wife, Nancy Rourke, whom he married in 2005.

Kody’s journey through the world of fishing is a fascinating blend of experiences from various regions, each contributing to his deep passion for the sport. From his early days chasing trout on Clear Creek in Colorado to exploring the excitement of yellowfin tuna and dorado fishing in southern California, Kody’s love for fishing has taken him on diverse adventures. After college, Kody was drawn back to his roots in Colorado, where the allure of trout in the state’s pristine headwater streams and tailwaters, such as the South Platte, Blue, and Arkansas Rivers, captured his heart once again. While Kody finds immense joy in fishing renowned spots like the Yellowstone River, Slough Creek, and Soda Butte Creek, he also seeks out adventure beyond the waters. Fall hunting and winter activities, such as saltwater fishing in warmer climates and cross-country skiing through Yellowstone National Park, add another dimension to his outdoor pursuits. Kody’s journeys from Colorado to California to Montana reflects a deep-seated passion for fishing and outdoor exploration, shaping him into an integral part of Parks’ Fly Shop as a co-owner since 2024.

Rob Olson, Head Guide for Parks Fly Shop, has been a key member since the early 2000s. Originally from the Midwest, Rob spent his early fishing years in Michigan’s Western Upper Peninsula. After discovering the wild beauty of the Greater Yellowstone region, he balanced education with daily river and mountain excursions. Rob’s guiding journey started in West Yellowstone and extended to independent guiding in the Madison and Yellowstone drainages. Now based in Livingston, Montana, he expands his expertise to Michigan during the offseason, targeting Great Lakes steelhead, ‘coaster’ brook trout, pike, muskie, bass, and salmon.

Trevor, a fixture at Parks’ Fly Shop since 2017, brings a local’s insight to our team. Growing up in southwest Montana, he transitioned from conventional fishing on Georgetown Lake to becoming a passionate fly angler after high school. Having called Gardiner home since he was 19, Trevor immerses himself in the region’s waters daily. His expertise extends beyond Montana to include Grand Teton National Park, making him our resident expert for the area. Trevor’s preferred fishing spots include the Gardner River, Black Canyon of the Yellowstone, and secluded tributaries.

Clancy Thomas, a Gardiner native, has been immersed in the world of fly fishing since joining Parks’ Fly Shop in 2020. Growing up along the banks of the Yellowstone River, Clancy’s connection to the water runs deep—he was introduced to the shop at the tender age of 4 and became an avid fly fisherman by the time he hit fourth grade. Nearly every summer day finds him on the Yellowstone, his favorite fishing spot lying north of Gardiner upstream of Yankee Jim Canyon, just below his grandparents’ house. When Clancy isn’t guiding fishing trips for Parks Fly Shop, he seamlessly transitions to leading elk hunts near Big Timber, Montana. His expertise extends far beyond the river, as he embraces the thrill of whitewater kayaking and indulges in personal fishing and hunting adventures whenever time permits. With a lifetime of experience and a genuine passion for the outdoors, Clancy embodies the spirit of Montana’s wilderness, offering unforgettable experiences to those who venture into its untamed beauty.

Meet Ethan, a passionate angler from Bend, Oregon, whose love for fly fishing runs deep. Since joining Parks Fly Shop in 2023, Ethan’s expertise in tying flies and his dedication to the sport have made him a valuable asset. Growing up on the Deschutes River, Ethan’s connection to the water began at a young age. Now studying Fish and Wildlife at Montana State University, he’s merging his academic pursuits with his lifelong passion. Ethan’s heart belongs to the Yellowstone River, where he seeks the thrill of hooking into big fish. His go-to fly, the bunion bug, is always at the ready for his next fishing adventure.
